I will never become rich from blogging. As I wrote previously, my husband bought me two books about blogging for my birthday last month, one of which instructs you how best to monetise your blog. However, one of the most important things that I learned from that book was that in order to become financially productive, your blog needs to focus on one subject so that you can corner that section of the market and become one of the leading experts or commentators in your field. However, right now, my field is motherhood. That is not something about which I claim to be an expert, and neither is it exclusively what I am about. I like to knit, bake, garden, cycle and raise money for Cancer Research UK, none of which I think I could write about in enough detail to become profitable. And all of which topics have more than enough blogs desperately trying to corner the market. However, I’m fine with that. Another important fact that I got from the book was that you have to be passionate about your subject and know that you would be able to write new and engaging blogposts about it day after day. Now, my most read posts are about the birthday cakes that I’ve made for my children. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy making them (and my children certainly enjoy receiving and eating them!) but there is only so much you can say about a treasure chest cake or a TARDIS cake! And until I move into making celebratory cakes full time (which will happen sometime around the 10th of Never!) there is no way that I could produce enough material to keep my readers engaged. And I really don’t want to go down the route of doing things in my ‘offline life’ just so that I have things to blog about which might boost the number of visitors I get. So, my blog will stay as it is, a random collection of my thoughts and journal of my more interesting activities, and so long as my loyal and returning visitors continue to return and read whatever gibberish I’ve been spouting from time to time, that will be good enough for me! Meanwhile, I need to find money to buy food, so does anyone know how you list children for sale on Ebay…?

Hi Jennie,
Loved your post as it totally reflected my own thinking on blogging. Blogging should be fun and spontaneous – a forum or place where you are able to write as and when you feel like without any artificial constraints. Raksha
