I don’t know what it is that has put me off cooking Chinese food at home up until now. I love eating it, and going to a Chinese restaurant or buffet would be very high up my wish list of places to eat. I regularly make an Indian or Thai meal at home, as well as of course the Italian pasta dishes which are a major part of our diet. But I’ve never really considered making Chinese food. And by that I mean more than a simple stir fry, which we do have reasonably often. It’s not as if it can be that much harder (if at all) than the Thai and Indian dishes which I love to make, so I really can’t explain it. Maybe it has associations with high fat and sugar/salt levels in my mind, which would put me off. However, I’ve just watched part of a programme on BBC2 called Chinese Food Made Easy which demonstrated that the recipes can be easy to follow and also healthy. She was cooking for the British Olympic women’s rowing squad, so it really must have been healthy as I know that at that level athletes have to be so careful about what food they eat. It helped to draw my attention that Ching-He Huang (the chef) made all our favourite dishes – sweet and sour pork, chicken chow mein and beef in oyster sauce. I’ll definitely be trying these! My husband will be so happy!
